Tree protection

Why and when is a tree grid really necessary? Many trees are planted without tree grids.

This will depend on the location. When a tree is planted in a paved or hard surfaced area, the use of a tree grid is recommended. It will prevent damage to trunk and roots within the tree radius (by traffic, pedestrians etc.) and the soil under the grid will retain its open structure enabling the tree to obtain sufficient water and oxygen. In short, a grid will prevent soil solidifying and will protect the tree radius.
